It’s said that one of the reasons the Japanese company picked the number 10.000 is that 万 (man), the character for 10.000, kinda resembles a walking stick figure (with some imagination)!
Manpo-kei (万歩計) literally translates to “10.000 step counter” and that’s the word used in Japan for “pedometer” to this day!
