Why a glass of water is more important than checking your phone 🚰
As you open your eyes and join the world of those awaken your first thought should be: where can I get some water?
~60% of our body is made of water, so we could argue that you are water more than anything else. Overnight as you sleep, your body uses water for several bodily functions like managing your internal temperature so that organs don’t get damaged.
By the time you wake up, your water levels have dropped by 1-2% effectively causing dehydration.
Why is it crucial to hydrate as first thing in the morning? Because proper water balance:
Kickstarts metabolism → Water intake stimulates your metabolism and helps activate digestive processes for the day which helps for example with digesting your breakfast.
Flushes out toxins → Overnight, your body performs detoxification. Drinking water helps flush out waste products through the kidneys.
Improves brain function → Proper hydration supports cognitive functions like concentration and alertness, which can be sluggish after sleep. Some people do fast in the morning and that has some merit but water can help.
Supports overall health → Hydration affects circulation, skin health, and energy levels, all of which benefit from replenishing fluids early.
Our ancestors didn’t have it easy. Upon waking up, they had to go through quite a few hurdles to reach water sources, which weren’t even as pristine as ours, and this has been true for 99% of our human history. They didn’t have time to check Instagram or TikTok upon waking up, as that might have threatened their very survival.
Today, most of us, can have a glass of water within reach as soon as we wake up. Let’s help our body feel hydrated and give it one of the most important fuels to function properly. To make it easy, you can keep an empty glass with a water bottle next to your bed before you go to sleep.
I personally prefer to wake up, walk a few steps from bedroom to hall, fill a glass and drink. When I do I really try to imagine the water filling my body and “feeling” the absorption. This mindful drinking has some magical power to it compared to gulping just because you “need” to. You should feel different when you drink this way.
Your weekly tip: drink a glass of water (room temperature is faster absorbed) as soon as you wake up before you do anything else.
